Are you thinking about taking the Duolingo exam to prove your level of English? Are you unsure of the best way to go about it? Then this is the blog for you!
The Duolingo exam has been designed to test your general level of English and is not based on specific exam techniques needed for tests like IELTS or TEOFL. The best way to prepare for this is to improve your general language by taking classes with a teacher or doing some self-study. While we always recommend students to take responsibility for their own learning and to study by themselves, we think the most effective way for a student to improve is by combining this with taking lessons with a qualified English teacher.
Tip 1: Learn and practise new vocabulary
Look up new words in the dictionary or note down unknown words you see when watching or listening to something in English.
Tip 2: Focus on your listening skills
Why not start watching a new TV show on Netflix or other streaming sites, there’s something for everyone out there!
Tip 3: Get reading and notice those grammar structures
Read a book, magazine, online newspaper or blog. Look at how different grammar structures are used in different types of writing.
Tip 4: Tune in your ear to american accents
Do you like podcasts? Do you listen to the radio? The test uses American accents so if you’re not used to these then get listening!
Tip 5: Practise your sentence intonation
Record yourself saying set sentences to practise improving your intonation.
Tip 6: Test yourself on vocabulary pronunciation
With the new vocabulary that you are seeing, test your pronunciation by checking the correct version with youtube videos.
Tip 7: Get writing and practise using descriptive language
Write short sentences about things that you can see around you trying to use new and exciting descriptive language.
Tip 8: Have a go at speaking about something for 30 seconds
Choose a topic that you are interested in and record yourself on your phone or computer then listen back to it. Do this a few times to see how you improve!
Tip 9: Practise speaking about a topic for 1-3 minutes with your best English
Once you have mastered speaking for 30 seconds, extend your recording to 1-3 minutes and keep repeating this until you feel confident to speak for this long.
Tip 10: Put your writing into action and see if you can about a topic for 3-5 minutes
If you have practised learning new vocabulary and noting grammar structures from things you have read, it’s time for you to put it all into practice and write!
